Was it just us or did the Pretty Little Liars Season 3 premiere feel and look oddly familiar? Did anyone grapple with the fleeting sensation of “been there, seen that”? Specifically, there were certain lines, outfits, and tunes that triggered lost and deeply buried memories of Rosewood’s eeriest twists. And after rewatching the episode we knew we were not going all ‘Mona Vanderwaal’ crazy — the Season 3 premiere mirrored subtle yet significant plot points from the Pretty Little Liars Season 1 premiere…the first episode of PLL ever!
So, just in case you experienced an unsettling case of déjà vu while tuning in to the highly anticipated event, here’s a list of all the similarities between the PLL Season 1 premiere and the Season 3 one!
Barnyard MayhemThe Season 1 premiere opened up with a shot of Spencer's barn. Well, so did the PLL Season 3 one!
Booze FestIn the show's very first episode, Alison and the Liars are enjoying a slumber party, divulging secrets, and drinking up. The same thing happens during the Season 3 one except they're one member short! (Alison, of course.)
Gone Baby GoneIn the pilot episode, the girls wake up to the barnyard door open and discover that two of their group members are missing. Aria gets up to look for them, and runs into Spencer on her way out the barn, who tells her that she can't find Alison and even heard a scream. Flash forward to Season 3 -- Aria wakes up in Spencer's house in the middle of the night and realizes Emily is gone. She stirs up Hanna and Spencer emerges by her lonesome from the staircase. (The first time was eerie so you better believe seeing a PLL disappearing act take place again was an heartsopping experience!)
Alison's BodyIn the series premiere, Alison DiLaurentis' body is found. In the Season 3 premiere? It goes missing! Is it a pure coincidence that this travesty occurs around the anniversary of her disappearance (yet again)? Probably not!
Counter KissesEzra and Aria recreate their very first smooch fest at the Bar and Grill bathroom by making out on Ezra's kitchen counter.
Running Into FriendsIn the very first ep, Hanna runs into Spencer while out shopping at the mall. They chat, interact, and Hanna bestows some of her fashionable wisdom on Spencer. Flash forward to Season 3. The girls are out shopping with their moms and run into each other yet again. This time though, Spencer and Hanna's conversation was much, MUCH juicier!
Kleptomaniac? In the pilot, Hanna Marin made off with a pair of designer shades. In episode 3.01? She was spotted trying (and leaving on) a blinged-out necklace. However, in an astonishingly change of events, Hanna remembered to remove it before exiting the shop. (No more sticky fingers? Good for her!)
Double TimeDoes Aria's gorgeous dress from PLL episode 3.01 look familiar? She wore it on her first day back in Rosewood after a year of carefree living in Iceland!
It Girl StatusTwirl's hot jam "It Girl" starts blasting while Hanna shops (and shoplifts) at the Rosewood mall. It also plays in "It Happened That Night" while she's out trying on new clothes and accessories at a local boutique. (Thankfully, this time around she doesn't walk out with stolen merchandise!)
Moving StressIn the pilot, the Montgomery family were unpacking boxes after their move from Iceland. In the Season 3 premiere, we find them packing them right up due to the fact that Byron and Ella have decided agreed on a divorce.
Back to SchoolIn the pilot, the girls are getting ready for the first day of their junior year. In season 3, they are preparing for their last year of high school. Let the drAma begin!
The Wren Charm Strikes AgainIn the pilot ep, Wren started using his British accent and smooth talking ways to cast a favorable impression on his fiancee Melissa's younger sister, Spencer. Which teen beauty was Wren charming in PLL episode 3.01? Hannakins!
Bikini SeasonThe girls were in bikinis in the very first episode so naturally, with it being summer and all, they slipped back into them for the Season 3 premiere!
Mr. Fitz to The RescueEzra shows up to Alison's funeral in the first episode of PLL ever and apologizes to Aria for being a jerk. They kiss and make-up. Well, the same thing happens on the PLL Season 3 premiere...except this time the drama is between Ella and Ezra and Ezra is dropping by the police station to make sure that Aria is okay!
Play Pon De ReplayRemember "Hands of Time" by Rachel Diggs? This haunting melody plays at the very end of the PLL pilot when the Liars all receive a text from A at the same time. The same thing occurs in the Season 3 ep -- this exact song starts playing when the new A sends a rather vicious blast to Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily!
Texts from AAt the end of PLL episode 1.01, the Liars receive a text from crazy "A": "I'm still here, bitches. And I know everything." In "It Happened That Night" they receive another blast but this time the message is even more harrowing: "Mona played with dolls. I play with body parts. Game on, bitches."
Do you think the writers are trying to tell us something by purposely including similar scenes, songs, and twists? Did you notice any other similarities between the two Pretty Little Liars episodes? Chat about it in the comments!
