If there’s one thing we absolutely love about all the Pretty Little Liars Halloween specials, it’s the gorgeous and unique costumes. Costume designer, Mandi Line, puts a lot of thought and effort into creating ensembles that not only perfectly fit each character’s personality but that also serve as works of art. For example, in Season 2′s “The First Secret,” viewers indulged in a wide range of visual splendor in terms of costumes — Spencer boasted a mesmerizing and intricate gown that immediately transformed her into Mary, Queen of Scots and Alison and Jenna rocked the dance floor as various versions of Lady Gaga. So what was it like putting together the Liars’ stunning outfits for the Season 3 episode, “This Is A Dark Ride”? Tune in to the videos below as Mandi Line and actress Lucy Hale reveal what sort of detailing went into the A-train wardrobe!
“I think the costumes are super important in this episode because — I’m not kidding you — on Wednesday mornings, I see it on blogs, twitter, you name it…[PLL] fans now have a standard. In one of the first episodes, it was a Saturday and the girls had just started school, and everyone was like, “Why aren’t they in shorts and t-shirts?” I was like, “I’m sorry. I need high heels and jewelry.” So I really think [fans] are expecting a certain level of creativity here and I’m given an idea so I have to stay within the parameters of what the producers came up with at that time during the [storytelling] process. But I have to also make sure that I’m really thinking like a viewer when these characters come up because, as much as Troian [for example] loves [Spencer's] simplicity, I also had to give [her costume] a little bit of shine, and glamor and satin which — [even though] you know — she likes the calmness of things. But I was like, “Oh. These viewers are going to want to see something.” So I really do keep that in mind because if you slack a little bit these viewers are on you. [Laughs]“- Mandi Line
“You know, I’m sort of gung-ho for anything. I would have been anything. But, um, I knew they were going with an old Hollywood theme so I’m Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby which is really cool. But they wanted the more glamorous version of her so I’m like the flapper — the 1920s flapper girl.” – Lucy Hale
“I get challenged more by like a dad in the script or a teacher. I don’t even know what to do with that. I’m like, “Is it a suit and a tie?” This doesn’t make sense to me. You give me a costume episode? Like Fred, the production designer — you give us horror, you give us this genre of anything conceptual and creative — this is where [we] thrive.” – Mandi Line
