Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! This week, educators all across the United States are recognized and thanked for their diligence and prowess inside the classroom. The learning process isn’t easy but amazing instructors help make the attainment of copious amounts of knowledge possible! And despite some mistakes in their personal lives, the teachers and coaches in ABC Family’s hit series Pretty Little Liars are a top notch group. So in honor of all the Rosewood educators who raise the bar each day and make a difference in the lives of their students, we’re celebrating. Come and meet the incredible Rosewood High faculty!
Mr. Sheldrake
Mr. Sheldrake is an AP Russian History teacher at Rosewood High. He’s enthusiastic about education and tries hard to make his students competitive applicants in the college process. If he looks familiar, it’s because it is he who approached Spencer Hastings in Pretty Little Liars Season 1 about the Golden Orchid essay competition. Not only did he submit it for her but he also took the time to congratulate her -- talk about a teacher who cares! (Unfortunately though, the poor guy didn’t know that Spencer had plagiarized the whole thing and that it actually was Melissa’s paper! Draaama.)Ezra Fitz / Mr. Fitz
Alright, alright. We know that Mr. Fitz was having a secret romance with Aria, one of his students. However, despite his questionable lovey-dovey behavior, Mr. Fitz is actually a smart and capable educator. As an Honors English teacher at Rosewood High School, he motivates his students to look past the obvious and dig deeper. He’s had them ready many amazing novels – including The Great Gatsby – and he even helped his students explore theater with “The Bad Seed.” Best of all? His courage and character. When Noel tries to blackmail him into giving him an undeserved A on his paper, Mr. Fitz refuses to despite being his job being at risk. Also, when Paige’s dad stormed into the cafeteria in Pretty Little Liars Season 1 claiming Emily was being given preferential treatment because she’s gay, Ezra rose to the occasion and smoothly gets Mr. McCullers to calm down. He also chaperones school events such as dances and he’s been published which is a major accomplishment (Anyone remember “B-26”? Swoon!) Now he teachers at a college courses at Hollis but we’re sure his Rosewood students miss his (hotness) intellectual discussions a lot!

Coach Fulton is the awesome coach of the Rosewood High varsity swim team. Despite her amazing amount of Shark pride and winning streak, Coach Fulton is all about her swimmers working as a team rather than individual champs. Thus, when Paige accuses Emily of being chosen as swim team anchor because she’s gay, Spencer’s feels comfortable enough to approach Coach Fulton with the news. The caring coach then in turn brings together Emily and Paige to talk it out and confront Paige about the unsavory and disappointing remark she made. Moreover, Coach Fulton doesn’t play favorites at all – when Hanna is caught skipping gym, Coach issues her a detention. She may be strict but she sure knows how to lead a team!
Photo Credit: ABC FamilyElla Montgomery / Mrs. Montgomery
True, Ella returned to teaching high school students as a way to earn more income for her rent (which she faced after moving out due to Byron’s adulterous ways). However, even after returning home, Ella continued teaching because she loves enlightening young minds! Not only is she an art pundit but she also knows a lot about literature. She motivates her students without being too pushy, considers their welfare (which is why she grew a bit hysterical when spotting Spencer in Ezra’s car on Pretty Little Liars Season 2), and even takes time out of her busy schedule to chaperone school events such as the fundraising dance in PLL Season 1 and monitoring the SAT exam in “The Perfect Storm.” And although Ella is all about rules, she is flexible and really cares about her students. When Emily approaches her asking for an extension, Mrs. Montgomery allows her the extra time because she knows that Emily is experiencing a lot of stress.

Mrs. Welch is a familiar face on the show. Remember all those times Aria and Ezra’s longing looks got interrupted? It’s because Mrs. Welch would surprise them with an impromptu visit. However, we can’t hate on this fabulous lady for getting in the way of Ezria moments. After all, she’s a wonderful English teacher who’s passionate about her field. She attends book events to keep up with the latest literature, is a friendly colleague, and she also goes above and beyond by helping out at school events such as the homecoming dance in Pretty Little Liars Season 1! Miss Shepard
Ms.Shepard is only a substitute teacher at Rosewood but we definitely were super pumped when she filled in for Aria’s English class (even if it meant an episode without Mister Fitz)! Why? Because she was none other than Sara Shepard, the mastermind behind Pretty Little Liars and the world of Rosewood. She was knowledgeable, cordial, and approachable. Plus, her handwriting is amazing and we always appreciate a teacher who writes legible notes on the chalkboard!
Photo Credit: ABC FamilyVice Principal Tamberelli
It’s tough to like Vice Principal Tamborelli after the rude way he talked to Emily in “The Naked Truth” and finding out that he was accepting bribes from the father of a football player who got kicked off the team. However, with a little nudging from Mona, Mr. Tamborellli welcome Emily back onto the swim team! And we bet in a high school full of creepy A-ntics and sinister students, this poor guy’s got his work cut out for him. He not only has to mediate major disputes between students (as he did with Hanna and her backstabbing stepsister Kate), but he also has to find new ways to bolster school spirit and tolerance. He even went so far as to facilitate “Truth Up Day” in Pretty Little Liars Season 2 --- a workshop meant to inspire students to own up to bullying behavior. (Plus, he’s got to deal with Mona Vanderwaal on a daily basis – isn’t that enough to garner him the title of Best Rosewood Faculty Member?)
